Pete Mariano
Head Coach |
Pete Mariano is in his second season at GHS as the Softball Varsity Head Coach. Coach Mariano led the Lady 'Canes to the State Playoffs last year with a District Runner-Up finish in his first season.
Coach Mariano graduated from the University of Notre Dame, and earned his Master of Arts in Sports Administration from The Ohio State University.
Coach Mariano began his 35-year coaching career while still in college. He coached various levels of youth baseball during the summers, and took on the role of "player-coach" of a college/semi-pro league team in upstate New York. Coach Mariano also served as Graduate Assistant Coach on the OSU baseball team while a graduate student. After graduating from OSU, Coach Mariano was hired as an Administrator/JV-Assistant Baseball Coach at Cornell University. While at Cornell, Pete served as the pitching, hitting, infield and outfield instructor at various times over his 13-year tenure as a Baseball Assistant Coach.
After leaving Cornell University, Coach Mariano held various coaching positions while living in upstate New York, including stints as a high school assistant in baseball and basketball and American Legion baseball head coach. Coach Mariano took on his first girls' coaching job during this period when he accepted the position of JV basketball head coach at a central New York high school. Coach Mariano then began his girls' softball coaching career in 1999, as the Varsity Head Coach at Charles O. Dickerson High School in Trumansburg, New York. He coached there until moving to Florida in the fall of 2003. His Trumansburg team advanced the farthest in the State Playoffs of any team in their school history.
Once in Florida, Coach Mariano was hired at the PK Yonge Developmental Research School as an Assistant/JV Softball coach. He also spent one year as pitching coach for the St. Francis Catholic High School baseball team. Since moving to Gainesville, Coach Mariano has been recruited as a clinician at the highest level, serving as a staff coach for the UF Softball 2007 Summer Camp, and as a hitting intructor for the UF Softball 2007 Winter Hitting Camp. 2008 is his second year as head softball coach at GHS.
Coach Mariano has been married to his wife, Judy, for over thirty years. They have two married children and one grandson. |
Art Donovan

Art Donovan is in his third year at GHS as Varsity Assistant Coach. Coach Donovan has helped lead the Lady 'Canes to the State Playoffs the last two years.
Coach Donovan graduated from Nova Scotia Agricultural College (Canada), and then went on to the University of Guelph (Canada) to Veterinary College, where he earned his DVM. Coach Donovan also earned his Master of Science from the University of Prince Edward Island (Canada). As a Veterinarian, Coach Donovan is on faculty at the University of Florida as a Professor in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences.
Coach Donovan has coached softball for the last 7 years. He has spent four years total in Gainesville Girls Fastpitch organization, the recreational fastpitch league, as both a head coach and as an assistant. Coach Donovan has also spent six years as Assistant Coach in the Gainesville Gold travel softball program. He has helped guide the Gainesville Gold team he assists to qualify for the prestigious ASA "A" National Tournament the last three years in a row. Coach Donovan continues to coach with the Gainesville Gold.
Coach Donavan also brings with him sports administration experience, having served as Director of Gainesville Girls Fastpitch from 2003 to 2005. He is also on the Board of Directors for the Gainesville Gold.
As an athlete, Coach Donovan played basketball, volleyball and soccer, and ran track in high school. As a collegiate athlete he played basketball for Nova Scotia Agricultural College.
Coach Donovan has been married to his wife, Patti Gordon, for twenty-two years. They have six children (Jessica, Christine, Sean, Amanda, Tiffany, and Trell), all of who play, or have played, softball or baseball.

Kevin Cattani

Coach Kevin Cattani joins the GHS Varsity coaching staff as a first-year assistant, looking to help take the team to new heights.
Coach Cattani brings with him over 19 years of baseball playing experience, 9 years of umpiring experience, and 2 years of university-level teaching experience. He is a product of the Little League Baseball system and also played at Hillsborough High School.
Coach Cattani is presently a graduate student at the University of Florida who will complete his Master of Science in Sport Management at the end of the Spring 2008 semester.
Coach Cattani plans to use his education in the professional ranks by working in baseball operations for Major League Baseball. Coach Cattani is very excited to be a part of the GHS Softball program, and hopes to use his experience to contribute to the already established history of the program. |
